Some round knobs have a small slot or hole near the neck.

Press the intended release point while pulling the knob away from the door.

Remove the decorative cover and loosen the mounting plate beneath it.

Older knobs may be threaded onto the spindle. Check for a retaining screw before turning the knob.

Paint may bridge the edge of an old rosette. Cut the paint line carefully before removing the plate so the surrounding finish does not peel away.

Inspect the Internal Parts

After removal, check:

Replacing only the visible lever will not solve an internal mortise-lock failure.

Install the Replacement Correctly

Confirm that the new handle matches the door thickness, spindle, latch, lock body, screw spacing, and cylinder.

Insert the spindle through the latch follower and position both handle halves.

Tighten the fixings evenly. Over-tightening can compress the door surface, distort the rosette, or make the lever difficult to operate.

Test the door while it remains open:

• The lever should return to level.

• The latch should retract fully.

• The key or thumbturn should operate smoothly.

• The fixing plates should remain stable.

• The handle should not rub against the door.

Close the door only after the open-door test is successful.
